O Tomato

About

O, Tomato! is a saucy, sensory, dance theater celebration of a widely-beloved, yet often misidentified, fruit. Created in partnership with local urban gardeners, O, Tomato! invites audiences to play, move, laugh, sing, squish, slice, and savor within community. Ay, tomate!

This interactive performance is a recognition of the tomato in all of its sizes, colors, and shapes, and a celebration of the urban gardeners, farmers, chefs, and bakers who give this special plant its ubiquitous and versatile life.

Produced by Marisol Soledad’s The Exuberance : an art-based platform for intergenerational play and connection in public space.

Description: Performa is a laboratory where artists create brave new dance and performance works in Philadelphia. Movement makers drop-in weekly to generate individualized, body-based compositions while working simultaneously alongside peers in a large, open air environment. Over the course of this 5- to 8-week long incubator series, every session is a chance to develop upon choreographic material or to start fresh.

Produced by Keila Cordova/3 Pony Show

Performed by Jaye Allison and Vyette Tiya

Philadelphia Fringe Festival | Icebox Project Space | September 2023

A Tree When No Moon Shines is a 45-minute multimedia dance theatre work that mixes storytelling with seeds concerning family, land & migration. It premiered September 2, 11 and 19 in The Cannonball Festival and the Philadelphia Fringe Festival.

She left behind a body a mile back: large, imposing, almost completely hidden in the reeds. The crickets were loud. They would tell her secrets to anyone who would listen. She stood now in overgrown grass, looking back at what was home, in the tandem tension between the past and present, between the sweet smell of honeysuckle and of red dirt clinging to her legs and bared feet. She remembered how the elders told tales to try to keep the young ones safe.

The tension between structure and chaos, mundane everyday movement, and physical virtuosity were used as tools to create  I.D.G.A. (“I Don’t Give A” ), a commentary on aspects of toxic corporate culture.  I.D.G.A. is dedicated to all who experienced corporate abuse and are now survivors and thrivers, “living their best life.” I.D.G.A. is an anthem for those who dare to seek internal well-being and genuine happiness, otherwise known as liberation.

“KUVV" is a multidisciplinary, collaborative project organized by choreographer and performance artist Hayley Cutler, exploring the relationship between home, familial lineage, and the body. KUUV culminates in an evening-length, live-streamed, performance on Saturday, September 26th comprising work by six participating artists, who were selected through an open call this past spring. Emily Ames, Antonius and Theresa-Xuan Bui, Jamie Garcia, Akela Jaffi, Juliana Ponguta, and Vyette Tiya have worked independently and in conversation with each other throughout the summer to create intimate responses reflective of the prompt: How does your familial lineage live in your physical body today, and how does that contribute to your sense of home as it relates to your identity?
